“You have a higher conversion rate with five-year-olds.” Nallen notes. “You will get less money but they are more likely to do the business because they haven’t been gunned. The one five-year- old we’d left this year, Minella Trump, he won at Ballycahane and we sold him at Aintree (for £90,000). He’s gone to Donald McCain. He’s a good horse. “Minella Indo could have made it at four but I didn’t want to take the chance. You want to do right by the horse too.”

Personality of the year John Nallen with family and friends.14th. June 2019
Personality award
The hotel played host to The Irish Field Point-To-Point Awards recently and fittingly Nallen was presented with Healy Racing Personality of the Year award, though he admits that “they caught me rotten”, having had no clue at all what was coming. It was well deserved. Horses are in the genes, his mother Babs Lenihan having been reared in a hunting-mad family around Ballylaneen in Co Waterford, while “The Boss”, Jack Nallen hailed from Banagher, Co Offaly. He was immersed in flapping during the 1940s and maintained an interest in horse racing subsequently. He loved greyhounds too and it was the sale of one particularly good racer in 1961 that funded the purchase of an old Georgian property in Clonmel a couple of years later. The Minella name came with it. They bought land at Lavally and began to educate young horses themselves. In the ‘90s, they raced them with Anne-marie O’Brien, then her husband Aidan and when they moved on to Ballydoyle, Annemarie’s father Joe Crowley. Hotel Minella, Minella Man and Minella Lad filled the No 1 slot regularly.
After a while, they trained the horses for the track themselves but around the turn of the century, logic prevailed.

“Sometimes they jump out at you the minute you see them. Minella Indo was a a Beat Hollow and a good family but the mother was 22 and people said ‘how did you buy a foal out of a 22-year-old mare? “We bought two Beat Hollows that day. One was Minella Beat and we always thought he was better than your man (Indo) but we got him beat in a bumper. He’s with Jamie Snowden now and he’s very happy with him"

Minella pushes the boat out!

The Nallen Family of Hotel Minella, Clonmel, gave their generous support at the Limerick Charity Race Day on Monday 14th October, for THE JOCKEYS EMERGENCY FUND, Be There for JT & Jonjo, in purchasing at the Live Auction, a specially commissioned watercolour by Peter Curling for 20,000 euro.

The painting depicts six jockeys, in a different set of some of the most recognisable silks, being splashed about a choppy ocean in a boat. The vessel’s sail adorned appropriately by JP Mc Manus’s silks, which JT McNamara always wore to such great effect.

The clever cartoon illustration partnered the registered owners’ initiative, who pledged a minimum donation to have their colours carried in the commemorative race card, which carried the caption
“ We’re pushing the boat out for JT and Jonjo – nail your colours to the mast.”

Curling’s subtle portrayal of a brave band of adventurers trying to navigate their way through troubled waters gave inspiration for the Irish racing world to give generously in supporting the event.
John J Nallen Trainer and Hotelier with his sister Elizabeth, said “that they were only too delighted to be able donate to such a worthy cause, and that the flagship charity event will inspire similar generosity to keep topping up the Jockeys Emergency Fund.”

“The House itself is classical, with a pair of full-height bows on the garden elevation, which overlook the River Suir. The main rooms are arranged around an elongated central hall which rises to roof level.”

It was in 1961 that a dream came true, and Minella was purchased by the late Jack and Babs Nallen, taking two years of refurbisment, with the opening of their country house hotel in April 1963. Add on another 50 years, with extensive redevelopment and constant refurbishment, Minella is now managed by John and Elizabeth, siblings of Jack and Babs, fulfilling that dream.

The Minella name is also recognised in the world of horse racing, and John is actively involved in the training and breeding of race horses.

So on behalf of our staff, we offer you a very warm welcome to Clonmel and Minella we aim to make you feel as comfortable and “at home” during your stay with us!

John & Elizabeth Nallen
