Minella Friend - News Clippings

Minella Friend continues Nallen’s terrific run
Monday, April 29, 2013
Clonmel hotelier John Nallen has experienced a terrific run of success with his charges in point-to-points this season and the owner/trainer struck once more with newcomer Minella Friend in the four-year-old geldings’ maiden at yesterday’s Killeady Harriers meeting at Dromahane.
The King’s Theatre-sired Minella Friend (3/1) made progress on entering the home straight before three out as fellow first-timers’ Out Sam and Mr Picotee vied for supremacy up front. The eventual winner moved into a challenging position for ‘Corky’ Carroll approaching the final of the 14 obstacles and, having touched down in front here, he readily quickened clear on the flat to dismiss Arthur Goulding’s Out Sam by a comprehensive four lengths. Mr Picotee showed clear signs of promise by returning a further five lengths adrift in third spot.
“I bought this fellow privately as a yearling and he has always shown us plenty at home,” said Nallen, who was greeting his fourth individual winner of the season.

Minella Friend ran out an impressive winner of the bumper at Sligo this evening, the countysligoraces.com INH 4yo Flat Race.
The John Nallen trained son of King's Theatre won on his sole point-to-point start at Dromahane in April and he was sent off at 4/1 this evening, having drifted on-course from an opening show of 3/1 (was 5/2 this morning).
John Nallen said afterwards: "All roads lead to Brightwells (sale on Wednesday 29th) next week. "I nearly had him sold this morning but I said I’d take my chance with him here.
"He is a grand little horse and jumping is his game. This is my first time at the races in Sligo."
Peter Teazle has two selections today on a very interesting Exeter card with a number of promising horses making their seasonal debuts.
Exeter 3:10 – Minella Friend.
A rather workmanlike winner of a Dromahane point to point, Minella Friend was somewhat of a revelation when he appeared in a Sligo bumper in May. Making virtually all under James Carroll he ran out an impressive 11 length winner from Captain Hox and Definite Row. Sligo bumpers are not always the strongest but the second was well fancied by connections after a promising first run in a very good bumper for the track and Definite Row has shown useful form since this race, when his next bumper and run to a reasonable level on his next couple of outings.
Now with Evan Williams after being sold at Brightwells for £90,000, Minella Friend looks to have every chance of starting his UK career off with a victory. The 17 furlongs trip may be a little on the short side, but Exeter is a stiff track and further rain that softens the ground further, should suit him well. Paul Moloney can often be a quiet rider in the saddle, but we would like to see him try and turn this race into a test of stamina and if he does, he will be hard to beat. Horizontal Speed is the obvious threat from the in form Philip Hobbs yard, but Minella Friend appeals as to horse with the most potential.
