Nallen: "It was incredible"
Tipperary handler John Nallen has enjoyed a dream month with the horses that he has produced through point-to-points, with Saturday’s record-breaking Aintree Grand National success of Minella Times following hot on the heels of the Cheltenham Gold Cup victory of Minella Indo.
Both are graduates of the Clonmel hoteliers point-to-point academy and remarkably the pair were both picked up at the same sale right back at the Tattersalls Ireland November Sale in 2013.
Following Saturday’s momentous victory Nallen joined Darren Frehill on RTÉ Radio 1’s Sunday Sport to tell the story behind both successes, including how the horses came to be named, his method of buying his horses as foals and his history with the Blackmore family.

The Noel Meade-trained Minella Fair turned the EBF Novice Hurdle into a procession at Clonmel yesterday.
Sean Flanagan was able to dictate terms to suit himself on the well-backed 9/4 joint-favourite and had the field strung out at the third-last, with only Force Of Forces able to keep tabs on him.
Minella Fair soon galloped away from him, though, and the further he went the better he went as he came home 62 lengths to the good. High Sparrow stayed on to snatch second from Force Of Forces.
Flanagan said: "He's a horse that has a relentless one pace, and jumps really well.
"I'd say he'll be a right horse when he jumps a fence. He's very effective on very heavy ground. He's as genuine as they come and throws his heart on the line for you."

Minella rocks in National Hunt Chase for Jonjo O'Neill

Cheltenham - Tuesday, March 15, 2016 - 05:08 pm
Minella Rocco showed stamina in abundance to run out a gutsy winner of the 146th Year Of The National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup over four miles and 25 fences at Cheltenham.
Taking it up at the final fence, the JP McManus-owned Minella Rocco (8-1) kept on resolutely and, despite running around up the hill, went on to score by a length and a quarter from Native River.
O'Connor, winning the race a second time, said: "The horse gave me a tremendous ride - he was as brave as a lion.
"I don't think anyone can ever question his jumping ever again as he was big, brave and bold.
"He has a huge amount of potential going forward. "It's a fairytale."

Corky Carroll won the senior rider point-to-point award for the last two seasons

Recent success stories at auction have included Minella For Dollars a winner at Lingstown trained by Denis Murphy and sold for £240000 at the Goffs ...
The hunter chase season will shortly be in full swing and the point to point version has been warming up over the last month. This article is a special feature and came about by discovering why so many horses had the prefix’s Minella, Monbeg and Clondaw. On checking the results records covering the last few years, there were 93 horses named Minella,18 Clondaw and 15 Monbegs. Most will no longer be racing but we have all heard of Minella Rocco, Clondaw Warrior and Monbeg Dude. Where do these names come from but first of all I need to discuss the differences between bringing many National Horses bred in Britain and Ireland to the racecourse.

MINELLA
This is probably the most interesting prefix for racehorses. John Nallen is behind the Minella horses. In 1963 Nallens parents Jack and Babs bought a Georgian property , built in 1863 near Clonmel in County Tipperary. They turned it into a hotel, which now has 90 bedrooms plus courtyard accommodation , a spa , tennis court etc. It is now run by John and sister Elizabeth.
Johns other interest is buying yearlings and store horses and giving them an education preparing them to move into points point yards.. He has all weather gallops and schooling fences at his Lavally yard. He doesn’t train the horses for point to points himself but uses Denis Murphy at Ballyboy stables Enniscorthy, Wexford and Colin Bowe, of Limestone Lad fame at Milestone Stables, Kiltealy, Wexford. They also consign Nallen’s horses to the sales.
Previous success stories include Cheltenham Gold Cup hope , Minella Rocco who Nallen bought as a store for €48000 and sold at auction to J P McManus for £260000. Minella Four Star won the Midlands Grand National in 2011
Recent success stories at auction have included Minella For Dollars a winner at Lingstown trained by Denis Murphy and sold for £240000 at the Goffs Doncaster January 2017. MInella Encore won at Killeagh on 18th January and sold at Goffs Doncaster sale 24/25 January 2017 for £100000 consigned by Colin Bowe. Minella Rebellion sold at Cheltenham Tattersalls sale in May 2016 for £90000.
Previously Minella Charmer was consigned by Colin Bowe having been bought for €27000 and sold for £180000 and is now in training with Alan King.
In naming his horses Minella something this provides advertising to the hotel.
Buying and selling horses in this way is sometime called ‘pinsticking’ . IT is fair to say that in all cases value has been added by the training and subsequent victories in point to points . The profits can be huge but equally the losses could be large with horses not living up to their potential, being injured or simply being too slow.

The point is profit – Words On The Turf
